This conference, organised by the European Policy Centre, focused on Canada as an example of harmonious multiculturalism. The debate was introduced by Sara Silvestri, Associate Policy Analyst for the EPC. After opening remarks from Ross Hornby, the Ambassador for Canada to the EU, Diane Fulford, Assistant Deputy Minister for Heritage Canada, presented the development of this unique country. By means of an audiovisual presentation, Diane Fulford, explained the history and the future of Canada. She insisted on the point that the key solution for assimilation and respect of immigrants is flexibility. The immigrant has to change in order to fit with the country but the country itself has to change in order to give the immigrant motivation and reasons to feel integrated. This speech was followed by a panel discussion focusing on the European point of view on the matter. Among the participants in this debate were Matthias Rohe, chair of Civil Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law from the Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg and Judge at the Court of Appeals, Germany, Haroon Siddiqui, Editor Emeritus, The Toronto Star and author of Being Muslim, Marc Hooghe, Associate professor, and Tim Reeskens, PhD Researcher, Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Between power point presentations, citations and examples, the members covered a variety of arguments including the "Fear of the other", the Middle East and the influence of the media on this issue.
